What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, or BJJ, is a grappling martial art focusing primarily on ground fighting. Unlike striking-based martial arts, BJJ emphasises technique and leverage over strength and speed.

The techniques employed enable a smaller, more skilled person to defeat a larger stronger opponent. A system of joint locks and chokes are the primary tools of BJJ. However a strategy of positional dominance can also be employed to allow a practitioner to use strikes to subdue an opponent. This versatility has made BJJ essential in the sport of MMA and to this day remains an important part of the training for mixed martial artists worldwide.

BJJ is also a growing sport worldwide, with submission grappling or no gi jiu-jitsu becoming increasingly popular. Competitions range from local tournaments to international championships, providing opportunities for practitioners at all levels.

Because of its proven effectiveness and the fact that the main training known as 'rolling' or sparring is so much fun, BJJ continues to grow in popularity worldwide. The combination of physical challenge, mental strategy, and supportive community makes it an engaging martial art for people of all ages and fitness levels.
